We have a nice bunch of pictures and some news from the new fishing resort near Krabi called Gillhams fishing resort. The lake has been stocked to about 70% with some very very big fish aswell as some of the other usual suspects and a couple of newbies to our pages. Take a look at the latest Release report.
So what could you expect from a fishing trip to this resort near to the beach resort of Ao nang? Well very big and hungry fish that are willing to commit suicide for a tasty snack as did this Chao Phrya catfish when he decided to grab and try to swallow a 5kg Giant Gourami in one mouthfull. Heres what Stuart Gillham the lakes owner had to say about this bizzarre event.
"Today we had a gutting experience when one of our potential world record Chao Phraya catfish attempted to eat a 5kg Gourami which stuck in its throat and choked it before we could get it out, it died in Sean's arms and weighed 47 kgs so it was way over the world record we do have a bigger one so fingers crossed that ones eyes aren't bigger than its belly".
The lake has been stocked up over the past months with some very impressive fish indeed including some very big Arapaima weighing up to 150Kg and a 120Kg Mekong giant catfish.
As you can see from the photos here of the Giant Arapaima on its final few meters of its 14 hour truck ride to get to the lake in Krabi. Arapaima gigas although giant fish, are known to be quite fragile creatures and dont take kindly to stress or being out of the water so we asked stuart how the 150kg Arapaima was doing now after it has had time to settle into its new home, this is what he said
"Yes mate the big Arapaima is alive and well and growing as are all his friends we see all the Arapaima every day as they have to surface for air every 20 minuets so its easy to keep our eye on them he looks very impressive when the water is clear we only get murky water after heavy rain".
This fishing lake is not only about big fish, oh no, there are also man eaters there too. The Wallago attu or Tapah as its also known are a very aggressive catfish species found in the Mekong river, Thailand aswell as Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia.
The Wallago or Man eating catfish as we like to call it is availiable in two colours. A nice silver and a dark black.
As the story goes, in countries where the Walago lives native people would often set their dead to rest on rivers. The resident Walago would see the corpses as a free food source so aparently over time aquired a taste for human flesh. These species can grow to 2 meters in length and they have a big mouth full of two sets of razor sharp teeth which are used to snatch and grab prey items, they are feared by some because of a tendency to devour ducks and dogs, so if you are bringing rover with you to this lake make sure he stays on his lead.
With a whole load of carp, catfish and predator species also in the lake the fishing here is going to be very varied and much more a thinking mans game than say the catfish battlegrounds of Bungsamlan.
We dont yet know if Lure or Fly fishing will be allowed but we sure hope so.
