Fresh and Saltwater Fly fishing in Thailand - Introduction to Fly fishing in Thailand
Written by MFT
Fly fishing in Thailand actiomn photos and big catfish catches. We are back again with another piece of exclusive fishing action direct from Gillhams fishing resort. In our last report from the said fishing lake details were still not clear as to whether Fly or Lure fishing would be allowed at this new fishing lake near Thailand's happening beach resort of Ao nang and Krabi town. Well we now have an answer for you and a bunch of amazing photos to back it up.

When we asked the owner of this new fishing resort Mr Stuart Gillham if fly fishing would be permitted on the lake we were unware that he was infact an avid Fly Angler and had been for the last 30 years so there was a good chance that the answer would be a positive yes.

Fly fishing lake in Thailand situated near Ao Nang beach resort.

Well good news the answer was yes and he was kind enough to take time out and send us a bunch of pictures to prove the sort of action that can be had on the fly at this Thailand fishing lake.

Heres how Stuart himself described this particular couple of hours fishing,

"Did some fly fishing today after work 5pm till 7pm started on floating line and had 3 x soribim, then went onto sink tip and had 1 x red tail, also lost good Arapaima when it jumped and threw the hook"

Catfish on the fly! Red tail catfish and Shovelnose catfish fishing in Thailand.

We are not concerned about fish weight or size here on this page, this is just pure fishing action. Great photos, great catches and what scenery oh and not forgeting the real proffesionalism of a complete angler to let the rod do the talking when asked the question about fly fishing on the lake, to just go out and bag up on big catfish.

Amazing phots of this catfish battle when the angler has to enter the water to keep from losing the fish.

Lots of people are always talking about the fight and what fish gives the hardest, well we can't answer that right now and Im certainly no Fly fishing expert to give an opinion but when you are required to actually get in the water with your rod and reel to tame the beast it must be enough to get even the slowest of pulses starting to gallop.

After succesfully landing a couple of very nice Sorubim lima catfish and switching to sinking line Stuart hooks into another good fish, this time a Red tail catfish.

Fly fishing in Thailand

Anybody who wishes to try fly fishing at this lake might want to take heed of Stuarts own advice to MFT.

" Fly's in Thailand: Tilapia any shrimp pattern, Gourami wish I new I cant catch them on fly sweet corn is better! Most Thai species love prawn patterns I tie my own fly's there is one pattern I made for bone fishing at Christmas island in Kiribati which was devastating over there and seems to work on most waters. Also saltwater deceivers are good as a fish imitator they work well at my place for red tail also the Arapaima like them, most fish patterns are good, some of the lures they use at home for pike would be good. I have done well on freshwater trout fly's in the past especially lures with lots of marabou and buzzers which imitate mosquito larva. As for species I have caught on a fly in Thailand's freshwater, Arapaima, Alligator Gar, Chao Phraya, Striped Snakehead and Giant Snakehead, Sorabim, Red Tail Amazon catfish, Tilapia, plus a few of the smaller species I don't know names of. Saltwater, I used to have my own boat in Phuket and have had Dorado (dolphin fish) Barracuda, King Mackerel, Wahoo, Trevally, Gar's, Snapper, Barramundi years ago when there were mangroves, Sailfish and one Black Marlin, Queen fish, plus again lots of lesser species."
