CATCH: Sunday afternoon. The dry season in Thailand. E-mail
Written by the_junglist

ImageIts been a while but even with all the going's on at MFT we did get a couple of hours to sneak over the road to the local (Klong) canal/river/swamp. Now in the heat of the dry season the water levels in the canal are low with only a few deep pools and shaded overhangs to explore with our trusty Green viper Killer frog buzz bait.

What a way to spend a Sunday evening before the football starts. Just a short walk through the Palm garden next door to our compound to the Klong which runs all the way through the town and about 8km down the road out into the Gulf of Thailand.

The original Bivvy boy's n Girl's, the Red ant's in these parts are furious little creatures. They build these amazing bivawacs from the leaves of a tree branch and form bridges with their own bodies to pull the leaves together and close them with some sort of silky mucus. Very interesting creatures to watch as they go about their daily chores but don't get too close as they have a nasty bite and are : definitely
 not scared to use it.

The late afternoon sun is still very hot but there are some nice shaded areas around this area which I had to share with these Angry looking cacti that seem to flourish along the banks of this part of our Klong.

An almost perfect spot for a cast , lots of lily pads and other water vegetation. The first cast creates instant action unfortunately not from a fish but from my dog Prapadeng who cant help but try to catch anything that moves for a tasty snack in between his dog biscuits. So with that last fishing spot now wrecked I move on with Prapadeng still in tow. All though having a dog with me is not the best for fishing it does help with detection of Cobra's and other deadly poisonous snakes that feed on the frogs and toads as do our targets the (Plah Chon) Striped snakehead's.

Ah, now this looks promising and Prapa Deng is making his presence known At a Palm tree over the way. A quick cast and on the first retrieve down the centre of this bay, bang a little Striped snakehead, definitely no more than 6 months old.

This area is a little pressured to say the least and my short session is brought to an early close when further on down the river I find a gang of Burmese workers with meter's of gill nets stretched all down the river. Unfortunately this is an everyday thing but somehow some of the fish seem to survive all be it only to grow to small proportions.
