MFT were very kindly sent a whole range of fishing flies from a Kenyan Fly tier named Charles. He asked if we would be able to possibly try out his flies on one of our fishing trips and maybe get some photos of any catches with his fishing flies, well here goes Charles, you got some great product there they really work well.

These new flies deserved a really good try out so I went back to a spot on a small local river system I visited late last year where I know there are Pacu present although only of 2kg maximum size along with the odd tilapia and Striped snakehead.

Fishing on a particularly hot morning, there was much movement on the water early on and no signs of fish topping as the sun rapidly reached above the palm trees lining the river bank so I chose to use the slow sinking Fly in the photo above.

The choice was a good one as after only 20 minutes of casting and trying different speeds of retrieve there was a seriously hard tug on the line and it was fish on!

Pacu are very furious fighters and pound for pound would rate highly on most right minded peoples list of fighting fish. They often jump right out of the water and will never come to the net on their backs unless tamed by an unusually brutal angler. These cousins of the Piranha also have a decent set of gnashers on them which are very similar to canine molars and are used by their owners for cracking nuts and dicing fruits.  cut line and lost fish so with that in mind I used a leader made from 30lb Power pro braid. Even using braid the second fish to take my fly cut straight through the line loosing me a fish and more regretfully a very very nice tied fishing fly.

By 9am the sun is almost unbearably hot and with the other flies in the box not producing much interest from the local waters residents its about time to go this time.
